Well i married my high school sweetheart and we have four children together. When i got pregnant for the third time we found out we were having twins. So we were excited to tell my mother in law and her reaction was… Now you two have really blown it!!! and said that we screwed up!

If this were my mother in law and if I was not close to her, I would flat out ask her why she has a problem with me. Maybe I would say,”Look, it seems like you hate me when you talk like that, but too bad, I am with your son for life.” “If you don’t start talking to me nicer, I will start tape record our conversations for your son to hear. Then he can’t deny the fact that his mother does not respect his choice in wives. How do you think that will make him feel? Think about it, because all I want is for us to get along and one day enjoy doing stuff together.”
My mother in law likes to gossip and one day I caught her and told her son before we both talked to her. Another way to handle this problem is to focus on how hurt her actions made you feel and possibly cry if it helps. In my situation, my husband and I focused on telling her that she hurt our feelings and also said to her that by her passing on certain information, it embarroused us. She did not know and appoligized. Unlike, the top example, I have never had to say that.
*Possible proactive things to say/do: Make sure to emphasize how the situation made you feel (hurt, sad, embarroused, ect.), possibly say you love her and that is why you feel you can talk to her about this, tell her what your hopes are for your and her relationship, make sure to listen, and tell her that you value her as a part of you & your husband’s/kid’s lives.

Oh my gosh!! When my husband(30yo) and I got pregnant, she said I destroyed her sons life & that I needed to get an abortion and it wasnt too late….what a psychotic witch, screw her….and to this very day I will never ever forget that horrible statement from her filty mouth….and I now have a beautiful, fun loving 2 year old son !!
