My mother in law has a lot of money. Which would be nice, except that she holds it over my husband's head and, being as he is an only child, has written a ton of classes into her well demanding that he do everything that she wants. She was renting her house to house rent free, and then decided to charge us $1400 in rent out of the blue without warning, along with a $4000 deposit. She has written closet into her will that state that if he does not make $150,000 a year before he turns 35 she will have them written out completely. And then all of her money will be donated to charity. She forced him into a career that he doesn't want to do, again, by using her will and his inheritance. I try to avoid her at all costs, but that's really hard when she owns the house. We also are not allowed to even consider having kids for another three years because she's got a clause written in there that if we have children before a certain age he'll be cut off. I've never hope that someone would meet their maker so much in my life until I met this woman. It really would be easier if she would she would just die, but at my luck, she'll probably live to be one hundred.

Wtf? Why are you guys letting her dictate your lives?

Also, don't count on the inheritance ever coming threw. It's always going to be something new as to why she's cutting him out of the will. It's the only leverage she's got over him, and will use it. If she really loved him, she wouldn't threaten him with it.

Legally, she can't charge you a deposit, higher than the rent.
