Mama’s Boy

Advice

I have been married to my hubby for 2 years and he is an only child. His mom thinks that he is still a 12 year old living at home. Example: she thinks that she needs to still set up his doctors appointments and go to the doctor with him. And she casually invites me to go with them and when I tell her I am not going (we have two kids) she is very glad about it. How can I tell her that she needs to let him grow up. He is 27 years old and not her baby boy anymore. My hubby thinks that I hate her, but I don’t. I just want her to let him be a man.

Dear Annoyed: Oh, come on, you know she is not going to “let” him be a man. (A) What’s in it for her? Absolutely nothing. (B) That isn’t the way a boy becomes a man: his mommy “letting” him. She isn’t your problem. He is.

Between you and Mommy Dearest, he has all of his bases covered and he is able to be the center of attention for a good portion of the time. There is no reason for him to grow up and be a man. I doubt you can say anything to MIL without starting a war (after all you are criticizing her relationship with her son and her mothering skills), nor can you force him to man up. Try to get her to keep your children so that you can go with him without her. You will win because you are being a good wife(I hate that term) and giving her time with her grandchildren. If she undermines you to the children, get a sitter and tag along. As hard as it is, you can not get caught up in the drama, it will only hurt you. She will be the martyr and you the persecutor. I wish I could give you a fool proof break the strings strategy, but he has to want to man up and until he does, you can only minimize the damage she does. Good luck.
