Mother-in-law Hell

I actually love the majority of my husband-to-be’s family. His father is a retired policeman and is very sweet. His two younger sisters are both still teenagers but for their age they are very mature and fun to be around. But his MOTHER…. is a completely different story. My family (mom, dad, younger sister, and grandparents) invited his family (mother, dad, sisters, and my fiance) up to our country club for a couple rounds of golf and lunch. The golfing was fine, but when we got to lunch, his loooovely mother decides to order a cosmo, and she does not hold her alcohol well at all. So half-way through the dinner, my 78-year-old grandmother is telling everyone the story of how her and my grandfather had met. My future MIL proceeds to call my grandmother a hussy and a whore. Why? Because my grandmother is catholic, and my grandfather is jewish. According to this woman, my grandmother was a whore for marrying a jewish man. My grandmother was too shocked to say anything, as was the whole table, and thankfully one of my fiance’s sisters had the good grace to escort her mother “to use the restroom” to clear the air.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time she has made remarks about my family. She repeatedly calls me a “hussy” to my face (her favorite word) and then later insists she was “just joking.” She is not only constantly degrading me and telling her son that he should dump me, but she also tells her youngest daughter she is fat and ugly (the girl is only 13 years old). Somehow, the girl seems to be able to shut out her mother’s hurtful comments and lead a normal life, which is exactly what I will be doing as well.
