Mother-in-Law HELL

I live with my family in law. I am awaiting my visa that allows me to work in Australia, where I moved to from America, so that I can work. In the mean time, my husband and I are stuck living with his family because it wouldn’t be financially wise to move out without both of us working.

The other night, I asked my family in law if anyone was cooking anything for dinner. I cook for my husband every night, and sometimes I cook for everyone else, when nothing else has been made or brought home for them. They all said no, they had nothing prepared, so I doubled the recipe I was making for my husband. My family-in-law tends to have a poorly stocked pantry- we’re talking half of everything past it’s expiry date and unneeded pantry items in place of pantry staples. Thus, there were only two types of pastas left- penne and curly pasta. I used both in the dish, as they are the same size and taste exactly the same, and there was not enough pasta to use only one type.

I will add, by the way, that I am good cook. I have been cooking since I was very young and was taught by my amazing mother. My food is not gross.

Because I used two different types of pasta, my mother in law took one look at it, and said in her home-language “it looks like it was made for pigs”. I didn’t understand, as I speak only english. My husband asked her multiple times to tell me exactly what she said, so that she would feel caught and hopefully not gossip about me like that again.

He finally told me what she said. I responded that everything she eats looks like it was made for pigs, so my meals shouldn’t bother her. This may sound cruel, but everyone around her tells her that her eating habits are gross and that she mixes everything together inappropriately. She began screaming that she would never do me another favor again, and that I leave messes all over the house, blah blah blah. I do not, by the way.

And thus ended yet another incident with my mother in law. I tried to do her a favor, as she was too lazy to cook for her own family and I was not, and she repaid me by insulting me in the worst way in another language right in front of my face. Thank you.
